LYTTELTON COUNCIL
Mayor’s Action Criticised
A Labour member of the Lyttelton Borough Council who topped the poll at the local body election recently, has criticised a statement by the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr J. B. Collett) that future local body elections might be conducted on a non-party basis.
Cr G. C. Adams said the Mayor had used his casting vote when one of his own political associates was elected deputy mayor, although he did not top the poll. “Labour candidates have always worked solely in the interests of the port citizens, hence the upsurge in Labour votes in this election,” Cr Adams said. Labour candidates had never introduced party politics into their council dealings. Cr Adams said that the Mayor’s group in the past held caucus meetings as they probably would in the future. He said that the Mayor’s remarks about non-political local body elections were hard to reconcile with the performances of his group or with his recent action in using his casting vote. Mr Collett had no comment to make on the remarks made by Cr Adams.
