Telephone Account System Changed

About 41,000 telephone subscribers in Christchurch and surrounding areas would receive their telephone accounts later than usual, the Chief Postmaster (Mr M. E. Wilson) said yesterday.

Previously all Christchurch accounts were mailed at the same time, but because of the rapid growth in the Christchurch telephone system the eight-week period covered by

each account has been stepped back by thiee weeks for half of the city’s accounts. This means that about 41,000 subscribers will not receive their usual accounts for another three weeks, and when they do these accounts will be for the 11 weeks instead of the normal eight. After that, however, all accounts will be based on an eight-week period. Telephone subscribers with numbers starting at 496-000 and above would be the ones involved in the change in Christchurch. Mr Wilson said All subscribers connected to the Kaiapoi. Motukarara and Tai Tapu exchanges would receive their accounts a week e..Jier than usual, Mr Wilson said. These accounts would cover a seven-week period and bring the subscribers connected to those exchanges into the new accounting cycle. Adjustments would also be made to accounts for telephone subscribers in South Canterbury and Buller. All subscribers who were affected bv the changes had been notifed about two months ago, Mr Wilson said. “But it seems that many of them may have forgotten, as already we have been receiving inquiries as to why no telephone account has turned up,” he said.
