HIGHER DUTY
Rise In Cloth Prices (N.Z. Prest Association) AUCKLAND, October 11. Some imported fabrics would more than double in retail price as a result of the customs duties, according to the president of the Wholesale Textile Federation (Mr K. Palmer). Some cloth which retailed at $1.04 a year ago, would now have to retail at $2.07, he said. On cheaper cloths the percentage rise would be even higher. “The Minister, in announcing the increased customs duties quoted actual increases, but did not state previous rates of duty," he said.
The additions announced meant that many cloths which had no connection with the New Zealand woollen trade would be levied a customs duty of more than 100 per cent in the overseas cost.
