Riccarton Ahead
Sent in by Riecarton, Lancaster Park was set back on Its heels by K. A. Nicholson, who threatened to carry on just where he left off last season. But A. E. Collins met aggression with agression, and his partnership with A. Harrison was worth 50 in 48 minutes. Harrison did not make the most of all the chances offered when Rlccarton’s bowling was loose for a brief period, but he batted attractively and well. Collins, with some splendid strokes, and some born of his commendable determination to get on with the scoring, was never a minor figure. After their dismissal, Lancaster Park lost ground steadily until W. R. Watson and B. C. Irving staged a courageous ninth-wicket stand. Nicholson bowled with pace and purpose, and R. C. Motz made a careful start. Off-Break Bowling In his first long spell in senior cricket. R. Miller did very well with his off-breaks. There was length and line and a little flight. Miller also contributed a fine diving and recovering catch to dismiss A. McKendry. The Ashburton player, B. P. Isher wood, yielded no byes and took three catches, a splendid start to his Christchurch career. Riecarton lost two wickets In a few minutes, and then R. W. Anderson was dropped. From that point, Anderson and G. T. Barrett took command. Barrett, looking for runs and playing very soundly, was a fine partner for young Anderson who. notwithstanding a few indiscretions, looked in magnificent form. Some square drives and square cuts were hit with tremendous power but apparent ease. Umpires: Messrs L. C. Moore and P. Prosser.
