First-Innings Lead To Old Boys
After beginning their innings disastrously, High School Old Boys just managed to snatch first innings points in the sec-ond-last over of the day against East Christchurch-Shirley at Burwood Park. Winning the toss, the East captain, P. G. Coman, elected to bat on a damp pitch. Except for an eventful innings of 41 from the young left-hander, P. A. Hern, East fared poorly against the Old Boys* attack. Fine bowling by A. R. Hounsell and W. R. Barberel restricted East to 114, but Old Boys in reply could do little better. Hounsell maintained a good length and returned the pleasing figures of five wickets for 21 off 10 overs. Barberel bowled steadily for his three. Old Boys scored only six for four wickets after five overs against B. R. Taylor and N.
Kelly—-and it was not until the Old Boys’ captain, C. J. Stevens, and Barberel came together that the side was able to get within striking distance of East’s meagre total. Stevens batted extremely well for his 57 —an Innings of patient defiance and powerful strokeplay when the opportunities were offered. Taylor was able to extract awkward lift from a drying pitch, and forced the Old Boys* batsmen into errors. Thirteen catches offered during the afternoon were all taken. Umpires: Messrs F. R. Goodall and t 7 Mathie.
