Opposition To Tour

The South Island District Maori Council has resolved that no New Zealand Rugby team should tour South Africa while that country’s racial laws are in force. “Because of the racial law of South Africa, no New Zealand Rugby team should tour South Africa while such a discriminatory racial policy exists," said a resolution passed unanimously at the council’s week-end meeting in Ashburton. Council members said that the New Zealand Rugby Union should not be placed in the “invidious situation” of failing to select a Maori for an AIL Black team. Mr V. Thomas, of Dunedin, the council chairman, said later that the council felt that in the event of a tour without a Maori player, such a team should not be termed “All Black” but rather “a New Zealand 15 All White.” The council’s resolution will be forwarded to the New Zealand Maori Council for consideration.
