TROTTING W. E. Lowe Has Strong Team For Ashburton

The combined efforts of Atanui, Corwar, Humphrey, Fri, and Barr' hill should assure W. E. Lowe of a successful day at Ashburton todav.

Atanui, Corwar and Humphrey will represent the stable in the Ashburton Flying Stakes, first leg of the Ashburton Trotting Club’s T.A.B. double. This formidable bracket will probably be a firm favourite. Fri is one of the form run-

ners in the Chertsey Handicap, for maiden trotters, and Barrhill will be trying to improve an impressive record in the Seafield Handicap. Barrhill has won two of his three races this season. In the other—a sprint event on the final day of the National meeting in August —he finished third. Although he has not raced since then he is usually capable of making a sound showing when fresh. Double Cross, which began her four-year-old racing impressively with a second to Maida Million at Addington a fortnight ago, and Selwyn Hanover, a last-start winner at Hutt Park, are generally expected to be Barrhill'* strongest rivals. Other sound prospects on recent form include Betsy Morano, First Pick, and Rhinegolde.

Tough Rivals

The hardest for Fri. which made an impressive debut byfinishing second at Methven last Saturday, to beat in the Chertsey Handicap could be the consistent Western Valley and All Alone.

Western Valley, a close second in the N.Z. Kindergarten Stakes at Addington in May, started his three-year-old racing with a third at Methven. All Alone, one of Canterbury's most consistent three-year-old trotters last season, would be capable of giving both Western Valley and Fri 36 yards and a beating in this, her first race since June, if she produced one of her best runs.

Outside of Atanui and her stablemates the best-backed runners in the Ashburton Flying Stakes could be the consistent Mister Chips and the back-marker. Lordship. The best of the two-milers in the President’s Handicap, the second leg of the main double, could be Lords, Flight Adorian and Wipe Out Credo and Sam Again might be the successful combination for the on-course concession double which will be on the Hinds and Elgin Handicaps. The forecast is good so the track will be firm. FIRST LEG OF OH-COURSE DOUBLE 11. a.m.— HINDS HANDICAP *7OO : 2:19 class; lim. 650 Anna Brigade (20) .. It 0 Boston Billy (15) .. It 0 Braken (2) ..
