CZECHOSLOVAK REFUGEES

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, October 4. New Zealand is willing to assist up to 100 Czechoslovak refugees, including wives and dependants, who want to settle in this country, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) announced today.

“The Government will bear the cost of bringing them to New Zealand,” Mr Holyoake said. “As in the case of Hungarian refugees, every assistance will be given to find permanent jobs and accommodation for them.” New Zealand posts overseas, he said, had been instructed to take the necessary action to implement the scheme. “At this stage, of course, there is no telling how many applications are likely to be received, and much will clearly depend on future developments in Czechoslovakia itself.” The Government had already received indications that applicants were likely to have professional, technical, or other qualifications for

which there was a demand in New Zealand. “But this does not rule out the acceptance of other applicants on humanitarian grounds,” Mr Holyoake said. On arrival in New Zealand, the Czechoslovakian refugees would, if necessary, be accommodated in Government hostels for an initial period.
