N.Z. TRAVEL BOOK
U.S. Author Interested
An American author who has had considerable success with travel books is interested in visiting New Zealand to write a book about the country. Mr Jim Thome, whose first book, “Occupation: Adventure,” was published in America, Canada, England and several Latin American countries, followed with “Adventures Under the Sea,” and “Red Road through Africa,” which was published in 1966 and was accepted as a curriculum book by schools throughout the United States. He expects it to sell well for 20 years. His “Guide to Adventure,” published last year, was bought by a direct mail company which sells 100,000 copies of all books it handles; and he has just completed a book called “The Inner Space,” which deals with the story of the sea’s resources and man living on the continental shelf. Mr Thorne’s interest in New Zealand, which he has visited, and in writing a book has been renewed by a letter from Mr M. F. Foate, the chief executive officer of the South Island Publicity Association. Replying to Mr Foate, he says New Zealand has a great deal to offer to those Interested in history, amateur photographers, mountain climbers, hunters, fishermen, skin-divers, international sportsmen, organised tour clubs who own their own aircraft, and holiday-makers looking for a new place to visit. Mr Thome says that after visiting New Zealand he should write a book that would sell strongly and get a great deal of circulation for between eight and 10 years. He also proposed to write feature articles for a new national magazine, “Men’s Bazaar.”
