Food Index Drops
(N.Z. Press Association) Wellington, sept 13. The average level of food prices last month was 0.2 per cent down on the previous month, according to the food group index of the consumers' price index. The food group index for last month was 1128, compared with the July figure of 1130, said the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). Cheaper seasonal fruits and vegetable* were mainly responsible for the fall, but oranges, pork, ham, poultry and eggs also cost less. However, beef and sheep meats rose in price, and meals away from home were also dearer.
