Open Door Centre Appeal

An appeal by the Open Door Centre, the coffee house and club set up in Tuam Street to cater for youths, has brought in $4300, but the Rev. R. F. N. Thompson, the assistant vicar of St John’s Church, Latimer Square, which promoted the centre, said that the appeal was a continuing one.

The centre has been established to “bring meaning into the lives of some of the restless young people in the city,” words used by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. A. W. Pyatt) in commending the appeal. The centre welcomed the support it had received, Mr Thompson said, but more was needed if it was to fulfill the objective of helping those who needed help. The young people who went to the centre sometimes came from the gangs and the gatecrashers, but they were potential assets to humanity who needed help. The dedicated few were giving that help,

the whole community could give it by contributing towards the cost of the work.

The church was not just a collection of bishops, priests and elderly women who went to divine worship on Sundays, it was the whole community, and in individual terms, a Christian member of a Christian society. Bascands, Ltd, had done printing work to the value of $250, Packer and Jones, Ltd, had supplied building materials worth $250, and Bowden Publicity Associates had prepared appeal literature worth $lOO, ail without charge, said Mr Thompson. The Christchurch Rotary Club had raised $3OO for the appeal, Mr R. Butler had given $2OO, and 38 anonymous donations—including three of $lOO each—totalled $513.35. Other $lOO donations had been received from:— Mr and Mrs O. T. Gough, Wakefield Metal Co. Ltd, Mr R. C. Rollo, Mrs D. G. H. Bush, Mr A. M. Satterthwaite, Mr J. F.
