Infiltration In Africa

South Africa’s Prime Minister (Mr Vorster) has said that he will do his utmost to persuade Zambia to oppose Communist infiltration in Africa. But he gave no details of how he would go about it. Zambia is regularly denounced in South Africa as the country from which Com-munist-trained African guerrillas cross into Rhodesia. Addressing the annual congress of the Transvaal National Party in Pretoria, Mr Vorster said that in three States to the north and east of Malawi there were no fewer than 4000 diplomatic representatives and staffs from Communist countries. China had a definite foothold in Tanzania and. with the withdrawal of Britain east of Suez, a dangerous vacuum had arisen which the Communist countries would not hesitate to fill. Mr Vorster said he was thankful for the assurances given by Malawi and South Africa's three immediate neighbours—Lesotho, Botswana, and Swaziland—that they opposed Communist infiltration.
“I am going to do my utmost to persuade Zambia also to adopt that standpoint,” he said.
