Racial Violence In Five Cities
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) NEW YORK, September 15. Racial outbreaks in five cities injured 17 persons and led to the arrest of 52 others last night and early today.
At Waterloo, lowa, in a seven-hour disturbance, six policemen were injured and 13 Negro youths were arrested.
At Decatur, Illinois, the police used tear-gas to disperse whites and Negroes in conflict. Eight people were injured, two of them policemen, and one white man was arrested.
In Chicago, two white youths were beaten by a band of Negroes. The three outbreaks all began at high school football games, and in Decatur the
authorities have cancelled a game arranged for tonight to avert renewed disorders.
Gangs of Negroes hurled bricks at the police early today in Toledo, Ohio. One white man was hurt and 18 Negroes arrested. Snipers last night Shot at firemen and police In Denver, Colorado, which had its second successive night of racial violence. One man was seriously wounded by the police who were pursuing him after he had fired on a patrol car. Twenty Negroes were arrested.
