‘Team Effort Required’

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 The United States has called for increased European efforts to strengthen N.A.T.O. because of the Warsaw Pact forces invasion of Czechoslovakia. The State Department says the Secretary of State (Mr Dean Rusk) and the West German envoy (Dr Kurt Birrenbach) have agreed that “action in N.A.T.O. must be a team effort, calling for increased European as well as continuing United States support.” Dr Birrenbach, a Bundestag deputy who arrived in Washington from Bonn last weekend on a special mission for the West German Chancellor (Dr Kurt Kiesinger) met Mr Rusk for the second time yesterday. The State Department said later: “The viewpoints of both Governments on major questions, including the continuing necessity for N.A.T.O. and the importance of strengthening it, are the same.”
