Damage To Ponies
Sir, —Little New Zealand has led the way in some instances toward true civilisation. Zangwill, now forgotten, wrote of America in a novel, “The Melting Pot.” Are we not all in it now? Might our small land not play an indicative part in production of a charter of animal rights? Not as token payment for the part they play in our wool and racecourse economies, but in appreciation of all that we owe them in living company. Ponies damaged can be of little guidance to the character of young riders. “The Press” today shows a retired Sydney policeman with his creature friends. He does not look a “cissy.” Might a just attitude toward animals not awaken a wider sense of it toward all the living world?—Yours, etc., BEGIN HERE. September 12, 1968.
