Search For Old Clock
A Mosgiel man, Mr A. D. Bishop, is looking for a clock. “It is probably somewhere in Christchurch, and was presented to my grandfather, Mr James Bishop, in 1878,” he said in Christchurch. The clock, a large blackmarble scroll timepiece, was given by the Wesleyan congregation of PapanuLwhen his grandfather married Miss Anne Bundle, Mr Bishop said. The couple went to South Canterbury, where they fanned until their death. The clock then went to a Miss Rebecca Bishop, who lived in Christchurch, in Bealey Street (now Champion Street). Miss Bishop had it until about 1942. “A travelling clock-repairer called, and as the clock needed some attention, my aunt gave it to him for repairs to be carried out,” said Mr Bishop. “It was never seen again, although the police made some inquiries.” Mr Bishop said there was reason to believe it was sold through a dealer. He would be pleased to have it back in the family, and was prepared to buy it, if necessary. It had a curved plate recording the presentation. Mr Bishop lives at 69 Gladstone Road, Mosgiel.
