LOW FAMILY’S GIFT TO N.Z.
(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) LONDON, September 12. The family of the late Sir David Low has presented New Zealand with works by the world-famous cartoonist.
The gift includes 50 original cartoons, an original sketch book entitled “Australia To London, Via U.S.A., 1920," seven photographs of Sir David Low at various stages of his life, five portrait caricatures, three original drawings, casts of the cartoonist’s hands, and 50 books, some written by Sir David Low, others written about him, and a number illustrated by him. The material will be housed in a special corner of the library at New Zealand House in London. Sir David Low was born in Dunedin on April 7,1891, and retained a keen interest in his native country, which recognised him as one of its
famous sons. He came to London in 1919. Before his death he expressed the desire that much of his work should be housed at the New Zealand High Commission’s offices in London for inspection. Mrs P. Rowe-Evans, a daughter of the cartoonist,
presented the gift to Sir Denis Blundell, High Commissioner for New Zealand, on behalf of the family. Conveying his Government’s appreciation, Sir Denis Blundell said he was sure that not only those specially concerned with this form of art and political commentary, but also New Zealand visitors would be interested to see the cartoons and other material.
“I greatly appreciate the kindness of Lady Low and her daughters in making this gift,” he added.
