30-year Bogy Faces Golfers
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. The New Zealand women’s golf team has a long-standing bogy to break over the next two days—the Australian women’s 30-year stranglehold on the Tasman Cup—when the two teams meet at the Heretaunga course.
The New Zealanders appear the more experienced side but in view of their past successes, the Australians will probably start favourite.
Both non-playing captains, Mrs H. C. Mac Diarmid (New Zealand) and Mrs E. M. Smithett, expressed satisfaction yesterday with the form shown by the two teams in practice this week. Mrs Smithett said she was hopeful of victory; Mrs MacDiarmid had no comment on her team’s chances.
Both teams agreed on the state of the par-75 course: “Perfect fairways, perfect greens.” But the Australians
have had some difficulties adapting their play to the greens.
Today’s foursomes are vital. Both teams are relying on pairs who have either not played together or have had few rounds together. The top foursomes is between Mrs J. Whitehead and Miss G. Taylor, of New Zealand, against Miss B. Dalgleish and Mrs J. Perkins. The other matches are: Miss U. Wickham and Miss C. Sullivan (New Zealand) v. Miss Dalgleish and Miss Perkins; Mrs Whitehead and Miss Taylor v. Mrs V. Howe and Miss A. Kenny; and Miss Wickham and Miss Sullivan v. Mrs Howe and Miss Kenny. The singles matches will not be announced until the end of today’s play.
The tournament will be played under international match conditions in both foursomes and singles. A team will earn two points for a win and one for a squared match. Australia will retain the trophy if the match is tied.
