N.Z.-BRED IS NOW DERBY PICK

(From the Australian correspondent of “The Press ’) SYDNEY. Broker's Tip, the colt by Summertime (imp.) from Fatehpur Sikri which led all the way to win the Canterbury Guineas on Saturday in record time, had become the favourite for the Derby. But again the search for the real stayer among the present three-year-olds has not been satisfied.

Broker’s Tip beat Real Man (by Ruler) and Rajah (by Star Kingdom) and fulfilled the confidence of his trainer, H. H. Riley.

He thoroughly pleased those who fancy his Derby prospects, for he kept up a solid pace from the start—the first half mile was run in under 50sec—and then fought off Ruler Man’s strong challenge in the last furlong, beating him by a short half head, with Rajah three lengths and a half further away. Yet had there been a real stayer in the field surely. Broker's Tip must have been’ beaten. A Precedent There is precedent for the Derby success of the colt, for he is bred on a cross similar to the A.J.C. Derby winner, Summer Fiesta, being by Summertime from a mare by Fair's Fair (imp.). Horses by Summertime—, Summer Fair, Summer Prince, and Summer Fiesta—won the classic in successive years, and

Summer Fair went on to win the Caulfield Cup three weeks after his Derby success. However Broker’s Tip comes from a colonial taproot, which, while producing winners galore, has not figured in the classics in the present century, and which in the last few generations directly connected with Broker’s Tip has produced sprinters with one possible exception. Fatehpur Sikri. herself, won eight good sprint races and was one of six winners produced by Kraal, which was by Vaals from Marion Acre, by Acre (imp.). Kraal won seven races up to one mile before being retired to her successful stud career. Fresh Prospect

The racing on Saturday brought out a three-year-old gelding, hitherto unthought of as a Derby prospect, but which now enters calculations.

The youngster, Getup, is by Sword Hilt (imp.) a Court Martial horse which won up to ljm, from Rare Treat which is by Good Brandy (imp). As a two-year-old Getup won at 10 furlongs, but the field was weak and the success made little impact. On Saturday, racing against horses of all ages, and against another Derby colt in Supreme Prince (Test Gase-Cuban Fox), Getup won most impressively over one mile and five furlongs, giving 71b and a beating to a five-year-old, Indian 'Bronze, with Supreme Prince I a moderate third.
