Stoneylea Shorthorns, Ltd. of Ashburton, sold a red-roan bull, Stoneylea Duke 4th, for $lOOO at the national Beef Shorthorn bull show and sale at Feilding today. For two bulls, the Ashbur ton breeders averaged $725. Only the Meat and Wool Cup winner and supreme champion bull from R. G. and R. J. Chitty, Ltd, (Tuakau) selling at $lO5O, and an unled bull from P. G. Thelwall (Porangahau) making $ll5O, brought higher money than the MidCanterbury entry. Last year’s top price was $l2OO, but the average for the 35 bulls sold at auction today was $700—5260 ahead of the average a year ago. The eight led bulls sold averaged $744. Four were passed in. Highest Average R.G. and R. J. Chitty, Ltd, had the highest average for the sale, with three entries averaging $917. The champion yearling from J. A. McLeod (Martinborough), which was.also reserve champion in the show, was sold privately for $950. Entries from K. M. Dysart (Seddon) were all late-calved and not yet two-year-olds. For three, Mr Dysart’s average return was $533. B. H. Miller (Waimumu) averaged $566 for six bulls.
Bidding appeared difficult around the $4OO to $5OO-mark at the beginning of the sale, especially for led bulls which were winners in their classes, but interest quickened later for the unled bulls, especially for aged entries which were proven stock-getters.
