Plans For Crayfish Factory-At Raglan
(New Zealand Press Association)
HAMILTON, September 10.
A plant to process crayfish and fish may be established at Raglan if trials using a helicopter for laying and lifting crayfish pots are successful.
The managing director of Don Scobie Seafoods, Ltd, Whitianga, Mr D. Scobie, said
today that full-scale trials would start in a few days to assess the supply of crayfish.
A plant at Raglan could employ about eight people, packing and exporting crayfish tails to the United States and processing fish for the Australian market.
Mr Scobie said a Wanga-nui-based helicopter was being used in the trials. He
■ hoped to have about 200 pots , in the area. I Helicopters could often
work in weather which made it impossible for crayfish boats to collect or lay pots.
The pilot could collect the pots by himself but two men were used at present. The pots were dropped to men on the beach, he said. The experiment is costing
Mr Scobie’s company about 8100 a day, plus $l3O an hour for the helicopter.
