Gums For Health

Sir, —The answer to the smell problem at the Aranui sewage works is Eucalyptus globulus, the common blue gum. With other gums for variety, including the red flowering E. leucoxylon rosea —all good honey trees for native birds. The blue gum, a provider of medicinal oil and essence is the most pungent and fastest-growing of these. The peppermint gum E. amydalina is another good one. Many noisome and decaying swamps oversea-, have been improved—with local health —by gum plantings. The blue gum is the most popular air deodoriser as its branches are open, like other gums, and the healthful scent is most noticeable on hot, still days. Mr Neary may rest assured that eucalyptus will end, or vastly alleviate, the smells or bad air problem, besides providing a healthful and beautiful tree amenity at the works. As many gums as possible should be planted.—Yours, etc., B. E. F. S. COLLIN. Dannevirke, September 8, 1968. _
