Thacker shield
Linwood’s meeting with Runanga in the Thacker Shield Rugby league challenge at Greymouth on September 22 will be its first with that club since 193? when Runanga won, 12-3. Since then Linwood has competed in four Thacker Shield games. It beat Brunner, 10-6, in 1963, but lost its other three games, against Greymouth Marist, 9-24 (1951), 7-13 (1960) and 5-10 (1961). Although Linwood won the Canterbury championship in 1938 it was convincingly beaten by Addington for the right to play for the shield.
The only members of Linwood’s 1960 and 1961 shield teams still playing are the captain-coach, J. A. Flanagan, and the vice-captain, W. J. Godfrey
