Site And Design Of Fountain Approved

The siting and general design of a new fountain for Christchurch, given by a businessman, Mr R. H. Stewart, have been initially approved by the City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) and a sub-committee of the Christchurch Civic Trust.

According to the chairman of the trust (Mr J. Oakley), it will now have to be approved by the City Council. The fountain will be on the triangular area in High Street opposite the Bank of New Zealand. It will feature a wall, down which water will cascade, a pool, and three trees. Seats will be placed round the trees and people will also be able to sit round the pool The detailed design is the subject of a limited competition among sculptors in Christchurch.

The area will be paved with Halswell stone by the City Council.

Mr Oakley said that the fountain would not be built until some time next year. He was unable to say when work might begin as the design competition and the selection would take some time.

A great deal of preliminary planning of the fountain has

been done by the trust's subcommittee set up for the purpose and headed by Mr H. G. Royds. In addition, valued advice was given by Mr P. J. Beaven who recently returned from Britain.
