Local Elections

Sir, —Now that the local body elections are upon us, one wonders how many old and ageing persons will seek nomination. While paying tribute to the fine work accomplished by some senior citizens, is it not time that an age limit was placed on those seeking election? Men arid women in the important 25-55 age group are needed. Could it be that the practice of holding council and board meetings in the day time acts as a deterrent? Employees do not like asking for time off to attend meetings, and the best of employers are not happy about it. Is local Government to be the prerogative of the retired, the old, and even the sick? It is pitiable and somewhat frightening the way the old and the sick cling to office in this present age.—Yours, etc., MUCH CONCERNED. September 2, 1968.
