WATERSIDE NUMBERS

Sharp Fall In Wellington

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Sept. 2.

The number of watersiders registered in Wellington has dropped by more than 400 in the last two years, mainly because of a reduction in cargo handled in the port. In August, 1966, there were 1619 watersiders registered. In August last year the total was 1390, and this month the total is 1215. No new names have been added to the register since August last year.

The manager of the Wellington Waterfront Industry Commission (Mr J. L. McGee) said that Wellington watersiders were sent away without work in varying numbers almost every day.
