Purdon, of Pukekohe, look among the best prospects when the Cambridge Club will open the new trotting season in the North Island tonight at Cambridge. Sooty is the likely favourite for the first leg of the T.A.B. concession double, the Cambridge Trotting Cup, and Selena seems certain to be at short odds in the Twilight Handicap, the first leg of the on-course double. An impressive performance at barrier trials at Alexandra Park last week showed Sooty to be well forward. He has shaped attractively in training: since. So has Selena, which benefited considerably from a run at the trials. 1 The cup has drawn a neat field of nine, the limit for one line behind the mobile barrier. Sooty apart, there is sure to be solid support for Light Evander. Master Cleao and Dover Eden. Several others have good claims to consideration. Light Evander showed fine form, towards the end of last season and showed plenty of speed after a slow start at the trials. It will be surprising if he does not give a good account of himself. Knockout could be a danger If he paces evenly. He is far from reliable, but not many pacers in the intermediate classes have as much speed. The withdrawal of Rannach Lad is bound to result in the Petite Polly-Precocious bracket being a strong favourite for the second leg, the Borough Handicap. Both Petite Polly and Precocious were impressive at trials

at Cambridge on August 17. A good front runner, Petite Polly will take catching if she be gms smartly. The track will be fast unless there is a good deal of rain today.
