Barton, and a brother of Gabrielle, winner of the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham and the Auckland Racing Club's Welcome Stakes. Red Scarf, Winner of the second Knapdale Stakes, had earned favouritism after a second to Hombre in the Aylesbury Handicap on the final day of the Grand National meeting. This three-year-old daughter of Bellborough and Red Boa was bred in Southland, and her part-owner, Mr W. F. Forde, is a former Southlander.
