COOKING FOR ’68 Oriental Dessert

Oriental desserts are not as numerous as those served in Western countries and are usually very sweet. The following is a recipe for Oriental Honey Slice, it is served in one-inch slices as a dessert For seven or eight slices you will need: 1 cup plain flour teaspoons baking powder 1 dessertspoon sugar Salt J cup milk 1 egg 1 dessertspoon melted butter 2 cups honey Oil Method: Sift flour, baking powder and salt and add the sugar. Beat egg-yolk; pour in melted butter and milk and add to dry ingredients. Beat egg-white until stiff and fold this in carefully. Heat sufficient oil in deep pan and pour a tablespoonful of the mixture at a time into the hot oil and cook until golden coloured. Remove and drain on absorbent paper. When puffs are cold place in a large bowl and pour the slightly warmed honey over them, tossing to ensure that all are covered with honey. Press firmly into a greased and paper-lined loaf tin and chill until firm.
