POST OFFICE COMPLEX

Call For New Building

“I doubt If any private enterprise would be allowed to function in this way,” said Cr H. W. Bennett when he reported to the Paparua County Council last evening on the inspection of the Chief Post Office, arranged by the Canterbury' Chamber of Commerce to press claims for a new postal centre. He was astounded that such an efficient service should be given in such conditions, said Cr Bennett.

The complex was a maize of alleys, with walls of old buildings pushed in and one building dating from about 1880. Three persons worked in an old vault. The fire hazard was considerable, and the nature of the buildings made a fire trap. “Anything we can do to help die move for a better post office we should do," said Cr Bennett.
