Mount Cook Village

Sir, —It is pleasing to note that the Cabinet has approved the site of the future Mount Cook village at Birch Hill

Stream. National parks are set aside to preserve in perpetuity natural areas of New Zealand. For those of us who live in the region it is obvi ous that the Minister of Lands has shown mature judgment in siting the village on the fringe of the Mount Cook National Park. Where Mr Wigley gets the notion that “the popular and obvious choice for the village was at Hooker Flat,” I do not know. The terrain, climate, drainage, and view of the Birch Hill site are far better suited for future development. The Hermitage area is surrounded by unique flora and fauna which might be threatened if future development were carried out. The present balance of ecology in this vicinity must be preserved.—Yours, etc., BILL WHELEN, PETER ROUGH. Mount Cook, September 1, 1968.
