Papanui Wins Vivian Cup

Papanui gained some compensation for its narrow loss in the Canterbury Rugby league club championship final when it beat a much - improved Hornby team, 18-13, in the Vivian Cup challenge match at the Show Grounds on Saturday.

Fine goal-kicking by T. Williams enabled Hornby to keep within two points of Papanui until eight minutes from the end when R. Venus scored a try to take Papanui out of range. Venus had then been on the field for 152 minutes, having played in Papanui’s successful senior second division team in the curtain-raiser. Although Papanui deserved its victory. Hornby improved considerably on its most recent performances and the inclusion

of three second division forwards—D. W. Moore. T. Teamo and P. Caldwell—cave it more thrust. Papanui appeared to have the game won when a fine break by D. J. Aisop and good backing un by K. R. Blackler gave the latter a try and the team an eight-point lead soon a. < half-time. But Hornby, assisted by five goals from six attempts bv Williams, fought back in an attempt to retain that trophy that it had held since 1962. J. B. Craig and S. Dunn played extremely well in the centres for Papanui and each was rewarded with a try. J. G. Clarke and M. R. Napier invariably made ground in possession and Venus, Aisop and Blackler, who supported his other forwards most capably, were the best of the forwards. Playing at full-back, Williams cut through the Papanui defence on several occasions when he joined the back-line. B. W. Langton and R. A. Neiman, in the backs, and J. K. Keremeta, G. Woodgate and Moore had good games in the pack. Caldwell made one fine break of 40 yards and also tested the efficient Papanui cover-defence at ; other times. The Papanui captain, C. R. Schwass, extended his points total in all games this season

to 110, 98 for Papanui and 12 for Canterbury. Dunn, Blackler, Craig and Venus scored tries for Papanui and Schwass kicked three goals. W. Woodgate scored a try for Hornby and Williams kicked five goals. The referee was Mr T. C. Houston. Papanui won the senior second division grand final when it beat Woolston. 14-11. The other lower grade championships were won by Shirley (third grade, beat Marist-Western Suburbs, 13-8),

Eastern Suburbs (19 years, beat Linwood. 9-5), and Hornby (17 years, beat Kaiapoi, 27-9).
