R. Purser Wins N.Z. Badminton

(N.Z Press Association) DUNEDIN. Play in all final! of the New Zealand badminton championships reached a high standard at Dunedin on Saturday night. The main event of the evening, the men’s singles between J. Compton (Wellington), and R. Purser (Taranaki), drew a gallery of about 300. Purser took an early lead after a ragged start by both players. Compton was more enterprising and aggressive, but lost points when his smashes fell wide of the side-line. Purser won 18-13.

In the second game Purser began well. Compton resorted to unconventional shots to break Purser’s commanding lead. Compton was down 1-11 before he had another chance to serve and Purser soon regained the service and the game. The all-Indonesian final in the women’s singles and doubles did not provide the spectacular badminton these players can display. Results of the finals matches were:

Men’s Singles.—R. Purser (Taranaki) beat J. Compton (Wellington). 18-13, 15-1. x Women's Singles. Mlnarni (Indonesia) beat R. Kustah (Indonesia). 12-11, 6-11, 12-10.

Men’s Double*.—Compton and M. Stossell (Wellington) beat R. H. and B. Purser (Taranaki). 15-3. 3-15, 15-i. Women's Doubles. Kustah and Mlnarni (Indonesia) beat K. Nurhaena and P. Tumengkol (Indonesia), 15-3, 15-5. Mixed Double*.—R. H. Purser (Taranaki) and Mrs V. Gow (Auckland) beat D. Gloyn (Manawatu) and Mrs G. Middleberg (Wanganui), 15-11. 15-5. Boys' singles: B. Purser <T.) beat L. Steel (W.) 15-7, 15-5. Girls' singles: Miss R. Glenie (A.) beat Miss L. Gow (A.) 11-2, 11-2. Plata Bvent* Men's singles: R. Dunn (W.) beat H. Gillam (O.) 13-2, 13-10.
