Hotel-Industry Talks

WELLINGTON, Sept. 1.

Nearly 200 hotelkeepers, managers, and other executives in the licensed trade from all parts of the country would attend a hotelmanagement panel discussion which would open in Wellington on September 9, Mr J. E. Ewart, president of the Hotel Association, said in Wellington today.

“This is the clearest possible indication of our determination to care properly for internal travellers and overseas visitors who, according to estimates just presented to the National Development Conference, could reach 700,000 a year in a decade,” said Mr Ewart. The Minister of Tourism (Mr Thomson) will open the discussion. The guest speakers from overseas will include two Americans, Mr R. H. Burns, general manager of the Kahala Hilton Hotel, Honolulu, and president of the Hawaii Hotel Association, and Mr J. P. Hickman, vice-presi-dent of International Western Hotels, Ltd, and general sales director of the Olympic Hotel, Seattle. Mr A. Critchley, secretary of the Australian Wine and Brandy Association, will discuss wines. Sir John Ormond, chairman of the Meat Board, will introduce a meat-cutting demonstration and a presentation of New Zealand lamb. Mr J. H. Henson, consultant to the New Zealand Co-operative Rennet Company, Ltd, will speak on cheeses. The latest developments in the hotel industry overseas,

sales promotion, industrial matters affecting hotel management, the work of the Licensing Control Commission, and the promotion of New Zealand tourist attractions abroad are other subjects which will be discussed by experts during the three days of the talks.
