Big Increase In Departures

I New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, September 1. The trend over the last 15 months for departures from New Zealand to exceed arrivals was greatly accelerated during April, May and June.

The Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker) said today that the net civilian outflow from the country in these months was the largest recorded in a June quarter. For the latest quarter the net civilian excess of departures over arrivals was 13,615, compared with 10,915 for the June quarter last year. This outflow, he said, was the major factor in the net population decrease of 4254 since March 31. For the year ended June 30 the gain in population was 25,194, compared with a gain

of 49,454 for the year ended June 30, 1967, said Mr Baker. The natural increase (excess of births over deaths) was 8861 during the June quarter, compared with 9020 for the same period last year.

At June 30 the New Zealand population comprised 1,376,613 males and 1,374,225 females.
