36 OFF 1 OVER
(N.Z.P.A.-Renter—Copyright) LONDON. G. A. Sobers, the West Indies and Nottinghamshire cricket captain, hit a six off every ball in one over from the Glamorgan bowler, M. Nash, at Swansea on Saturday to set a world record of 36 runs off a sixball over. Sobers’s fifth six seemed destined to fall inside the boundary before being caught by R. Davis—who then fell back over the line. There was an appeal for a catch but the umpire, after consulting Davis and his Glamorgan team-mate,
A. Cordle, who saw the Incident, awarded another six. Sobers scored 76 in 35 minutes, including seven sixes and six fours.
The previous record for one six-ball over was 34 by E. Alletson, also of Nottinghamshire, against E. H. Killick, of Sussex, at Hove in 1911 but that included two no-balls. C. Inman (Leicestershire) in 1965 and C. Smart (Glamorgan) in 1935 were credited with 32 in one sixball over, and A. Wellard (Somerset) held the previous record for the number of sixes in an over when he struck five against F. Woolley (Kent) at Well* in 1938.
