FOREST HILLS TENNIS Stolle Put Out By Amateur
(N. Z.P.A. -Reuter— Copyright) FOREST HILLS (New York). The Australian professional, F. Stolle, was knocked out of the United States open tennis championship by the 23-year-old British amateur, P. Curtis, at Forest Hills on Saturday.
Curtis survived two match points before clinching a thrilling win, 6-8, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 8-6.
Curtis, ranked seventh in Britain, looked doomed to defeat when he was 5-6 down in the fifth set, and trailing 15-40. But four fine services pulled him out of trouble. Stolle double-faulted to lose the vital thirteenth game, and Curtis, serving powerfully, clinched a place in the third round in the next game on his first match point. Curtis said his win was probably the finest performance of his career.
Stolle, who took five sets to beat Curtis in the British hard-court championships in Bournemouth last April, was the third professional to be knocked out of the tournament by an amateur. He has been going through a bad patch, losing to the amateur, C. Graebner (United States) in three sets at Wimbledon. 8-3, 6-1, against Miss P. Teeguparden, a 17-year-old Californian schoolgirl. Mrs Jones, a professional, needed a few games to loosen up against her amateur opponent.
