Saigon On The Alert

The Saigon police have arrested an underground Viet Cong commando unit in the heart of the capital. , Their raids came after the capture by Government troops of a Viet Cong document calling for sabotage in the city tomorrow, the guerrillas’ “Independence Day.” September 2 commemorates President Ho Chi Minh’s 1945 decision to challenge French control of the then IndoChina.
Special patrols have been ordered in the capital this week-end and the police have been placed on a full alert. Ten persons, including three women, were arrested in last night’s raids on houses not far from the Presidential Palace, the main city market, and in the Chinese quarter, i Cholon. Chinese-made machine-guns, explosives and a rocket launcher were seized.
