Albert Schweitzer
Sir,—September 4is the anniversary of Dr Albert Schweitzer's death. From our knowledge of his life ' and thoi ght we are, to some extent, equipped to analyse the vast area of his soul, and this leaves us struggling for words adequately to describe the quality of his reverence for life —all life. In total contrast to the spirit which moves arms-to-kill into Africa and elsewhere, the shiploads of hospital requirements into Lombarene symbolised his compassion for the dark-skin-ned people; also atonement for the misdeeds of those who chose the dark-skinned people as fodder to satisfy and strengthen an allegiance to Mammon. The strong and beautiful lamp at Lamborene which defines and refines a much-needed pattern of human behaviour may also some day provide young schoolchildren, the world over, with a spiritual food to mould and nourish a real code of lifetime ethics.— Yours, etc., J. P. E. August 15, 1968.
