Plan To Ski Down Mount Cook

A Japanese, Mr H. Nahda, intends to attempt to ski down Mount Cook if the weather is favourable.

Mr Nahda, a professional ski instructor and photographer, did not say how he would reach the summit to ski down the mountain. “Mount Cook is very dangerous,” he said, “but I have been training in the Australian Alps for the attack.” Christchurch mountaineers and skiers say the feat is impossible. In their opinion Mount Cook is a mountain for climbing, not ski-ing, and climbers have to be roped. Mr Nahda said that his attempt was being sponsored by a Japanese company which makes ski-ing equipment. He will leave New Zealand on September 5.
