Permit Allocation Criticised
“The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL. “As our club gives the highest stakes per race of the clubs south of Christchurch, we think that racing in Southland and Otago would have benefited by an extra permit if we had received It,” said Mr W. D. Hopcroft, president of the Riverton Racing Club, at the club’s annual meeting.
“During the year, when an extra permit became available, we applied through the Southland District Committee to have this permit allocated to our club to race in midNovember,*' Mr Hopcroft said. “However, the Southland Racing Club also applied, and its application received the recommendation of the district committee.
“The Southland District Committee is composed of one representative from each of the Gore, Wyndham, Winton, Walrio and Riverton clubs, the Birchwood Hunt, and the Eastern Southland
Hunt, and seven representatives from the Southland Racing Club, with the chairman, to be one of the Southland representatives, having a casting vote.
“By this you can see how futile it Is to expect any success for a permit if the local metropolitan club also applies. I feel members are entitled to know the true state of affairs,” Mr Hopcroft said.
