S.I. PORT WANTED
Tasman Sea Service
Support for the efforts of the South Island Publicity Association to have a South Island port included in the schedule for the coming Tasman roll-on shipping service was given by the South Island Local Bodies’ Association at a meeting of its executive in Christchurch yesterday.
In view of the serious effect on exports through the lack of a direct South Island-Aus-tralia shipping link, said the publicity association in a letter, it had asked the Union Steam Ship Company to include at least one South Island port on its new service, to start in October. Unless the South Island had a service, both importers and exporters would be penalised,
said Mr P. J. Scott (Dunedin City). They would be hit by extra freight charges in shipping through the North Island.
If enough goods were offering from the South Island, the company would be bound to do something, said Mr W. P. Glue (Christchurch City). A South Island port of call would encourage South Island industries that were trying to develop export trade, said the Mayor of Christchurch (Sir George Manning). The executive asked the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr J. B. Collett) to collaborate with the publicity association in its efforts.
