Boys’ Golf To Guise

(N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA.

D. S. Guise (Hutt) yesterday beat J. Whitaker (Balmacewen) to win the 1968 New Zealand boys’ golf championship, played at Rotorua He wop the final 2 up in unpleasant conditions which marred the last day of play in the championship. Last year Guise was runnerup to C. J. Smale (Auckland) —now of Manawatu—who failed to qualify this year. Aged 16, Guise still has another year as a junior. Whitaker is 17. Both Guise and Whitaker play on a 2 handicap.

On a saturated course in showery conditions with a fluctuating wind, both finalists played good golf under the circumstances Guise being five over the 6161 yd par-71 course at the end of the round, and Whitaker six over.

The plate event was won by R. Faulknor (Masterton), by default from J. Barbour (Highfield).

Big Field Entries for New Zealand's longest motor race, the Benson and Hedges SOO, closed yesterday with 43 cars listed, three more than can be accommodated. The race, for standard saloons assembled in New Zealand, will be run at Pukekohe on October 19.
