The first United States open tennis championships will move into its second day with two professionals, one seeded, already having fallen to amateur players.

A. Gimeno (Spain), seeded No. 10, lost to R. Moore (South Africa) in the opening round, in four sets. Moore, although only 22, is an experienced player and had beaten Gimeno in five sets at Wimbledon. This time, he won, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, with surprising ease. B. Mac Kay, an American professional, was beaten in four sets by J. Osborne,

ranked thirteenth in the United States. British players will now open their quest for the title and in some cases a share of the SUSIOO.OOO prize money.

Mrs A. Jones, second seed and a professional, will play Miss P. Teeguarden (California). Two British amateurs will also be in action, Miss V. Wade, fourth seed, against Miss S. de Fina (Florida), and Mrs J. Williams against Miss M. A. Eisel, the seventh seed (St Louis).

R. Taylor, the left-handed English professional, will open his campaign against

;R. Tutvin. The Australian professional, J. Newcombe, the Forest Hills winner last year when it was an amateur tournament, will meet A. Quay (United States). Newcombe is seeded No. 4. Moore will next face B. Lutz (United States), who celebrated his twenty-first birthday on Wednesday with an easy win over P. Burway (Canada). K. Rosewall (Australia), D. Ralston (United States) and C. Pasarell (United States) were among the seeds to win. R. Laver and A. Roche, of Australia, the top two seeds, have byes in the first round.
