NEW POST OFFICE

Hampshire St Site

The huge child population in Hampshire street, Aranui—about 1000—has prompted the Post Office to break its general rule about the siting of its suburban offices. The Postmaster-General (Mr Scott) announced yesterday that a new office could be opened in the Hampshire street shopping area even though there is an existing Post Office half a mile away in Pages Road.

The shopping area is about half way down Hampshire Street, which is more than one mile long and is bounded by Breezes road and Wainoni Road.

Hampshire Street is believed to contain more children than any other of comparable size in New Zealand The Post Office has agreed to give the people in their street their own Post Office because of the burden imposed on many mothers in going all the way on foot to Pages Road with small children. Agitation for a Post Office in Hampshire Street had been going on for many months and a petition signed by 1100 persons had been submitted to Mr Scott by the member of Parliament for Avon (Mr J. Mathison). Mr Mathison said yesterday that the new office would be in one of a new block of shops being built adjoining the existing shopping area.
