Hasluck Discusses Czech Illusions’

(N.Z. Press Association-Copyright)

CANBERRA, August 29.

The Australian External Affairs Minister, Mr Paul Hasluck. today warned against what he termed the “illusion” that Czechoslovakia had been heading for Western-style democracy before her invasion by Warsaw Pact nations.

He told the former Labour Opposition leader, Mr Arthur Calweil, in the House of Representatives that events in Prague before the invasion had shown “a nationalist movement... a liberalising” but not a complete change of outlook.

The wave of sympathy for the Czechoslovak people, said Mr Hasluck, could make others forget that “The Czechoslovak Government is a Communist Government.” He told Mr Calweil, who had asked for a report on the Czechoslovak situation: “One of the unknown factors . . . is the way in which the people of Czechoslovakia will respond to the appeals of their own Government.” The Prague authorities

“want to preserve their own Government and avoid the imposition of any puppet government,” he said.
