U.K. Churches Pillaged
(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) LONDON, Aug. 28.
Britain’s clergymen have been warned to take stricter security measures in their churches because of a steep rise in thefts from them. Insurance experts, who describe the situation as “very serious,” say hardly a dav passes without a cathedral or church being robbed or desecrated.
Investigators believe an organised group of criminals may be systematically looting churches and shipping the valuables they steal to the United States. A rare gold Elizabethan chalice could be worth only SNZ4OOO when melted down but as an antique it could well fetch more than $NZ35,000, they say. It is estimated that the value of goblets, chalices, plate and other antiques in Britain’s 20,000 Anglican churches is more than JNZ2O million.
