Death Sentence In Haiti
(N Z P.A.-Reuter —Copyright)
PORT-AU-PRINCE, August 29. David Knox, the Bahamas Government Information Director, was sentenced to death last night on six spy charges at the end of a two week and a half trial before a military tribunal of five senior Haitian Army officers.
Knox, who is 45, stood rigidly to attention facing the judges, who sat below a photograph of President Francois Duvalier during the 20minute reading of indictments. Each was followed by a verdict of guilty. The guards then seized Knox’s hands behind his back and handcuffed him.
He was allowed to sit awkwardly with hands still manacled but managed to drop a fleeting'wink at foreign re-
porters who covered the trial. Then he was marched away across a parade square between a picket of rifle-carry-ing soldiers. Knox, who was born in South Africa, was arrested on June 1 on spying charges connected with an abortive invasion of Haiti towards the end of May. He said in Court he came to Haiti on May 31 to have plastic surgery performed on his face.
