French Nuclear Tests

Sir, —France, unresponsive to the fragmented individual protests of concerned countries, may prove vulnerable to an organised, concerted protest of all of them, especially if that protest contained the threat of tough economic sanctions. How many people would such a protest represent? Three hundred million or more, whose voice would command attention. Rich, advanced New Zealand, with special responsibilities for island peoples, who are threatened and frightened by the tests, is well positioned to immediately organise a massive inter-Pacific protest, with sanctions teeth. If our Government has the wit and will to move on this, it would have the support of most of the world. It should not matter a damn that New Zealand would lose more than France from sanctions; over-all, France would be the big loser. It is late, but not too late: the tests are to go on for years.—Yours, etc., UNITED WE STAND. August 29, 1968.
