Back To School

Primary, intermediate, and district high schools of the Canterbury Education Board will resume next Monday, but most secondary schools will not reopen until Monday, September 9. Kindergartens will also resume on September 9.

Award Talks

Freezing workers would : ask that the 5 per cent general wage order be applied to cover all wages, said the secretary of the New Zealand Freezing Workers’ Association (Mr F. E. McNulty) yesterday. They would also ask that the ceilings imposed by the Arbitration Court not be followed by the industry. Mr McNulty said that this decision was reached in Wellington on Wednesday. The freezing workers will next month meet their employers to discuss a new award for the coming killing season. Antarctic Planes Two United States Navy Hercules are due to land at Christchurch Airport on a flight from the United States. Next week, probably on Tuesday, they will fly to Antarctica. •

Book For Mayor

A copy of the book, “The Australians,” was presented to the Mayor (Sir George Manning) yesterday by Miss Katrina Chijoff, special promotions officer for Qantas and hostess at the Australian court at the New Zealand Industries Fair. Presenting the book on behalf of the Qantas management. Miss Chijoff said that Sir George Manning's belief in closer cooperation between Australia and New Zealand was well known in Australia, and she hoped that in his retirement from public office the book would remind him of a country which appreciated his views.
